What an awe inspiring walk we had on our way to Santo Domingo de Calzada , not only was there the prospect of our first rest day in 7 days and passing the 200 km milestone ... but we started with an unexpected blessing due to my alarm not going off. There is often an issue finding breakfast before 7:30 on the Camino so you either buy provisions the night before or get something down the track but this morning with being 20 min later than planned and a generous hostess we were allowed to take beakfast early -... it was great so I also filled pockets with snacks for later in the day .. after all that we were told that the breakfast was included ... a double blessing .
So we set out in our boots , as our feet were feeling better ,and were soon in the long processions of pilgrims wending their way out of town , this time up a steep hill to a plateau and the beginning of the most amazing patchwork creation that we have seen as fields of different colours and shapes covered the landscape fore as fare as the eye could see...we just stumbled along in awe.
We were also blessed by unexepectedhy running into our Canadian fiends at a cafe con leche stop . chatting with what now seem like old friends made the time go even faster .A by the way we Came onto a Country club and resplendent golf Course where Pilgrims were welcomed SO in we trotted and had lunch ... very nice . we then we realised we were in a town of brand new housing and facilities that was practically empty ... apparently a huge development that got hit by the crash of 2008 which was felt particularly bad in Spain ... there world be some good home deals if anyone was interested .
Very soon we were into the outskirts of our destination which always seem to be the backdoor , often the dirty end of town -.. I guess as pilgrims on the road for 12 day we didn't look too Flash either.
Again it was always a couple of km's longer then were told but finally made it to our rest day hotel, a bit of luxury @ a paradore ... Ours a converted 16 th century convent . it was amazing .
So we had made it and looted forward to a sleep in . catch up on our washing and blog updates ... and sight seeing. This was the baton of the legend of the hen ¢ rooster miracle ... more I that next post ... Buen Camino
ps: in province of la rioja in which we are in someone came up with the brilliant idea of reminding weary pilgrims evey km just how many kms they had to go to santiago, fair to say that a few of the signs had kms forceably removed.☺
