Despite a wonderful relaxing time at our Palas de Rei alburgue ( lovely grounds and the first opportunity to try pulpo ie. Octopus ) we didn't sleep that well . Its a trade off of closing the windows & shutters to keep out the light so we can sleep or leave open to get some air ...so without a/con it can get hot & stuffy.
With about 17km to walk ,a good breakfast under our belt and surrounded by the thickest fog we have seen so far,we headed off for Melide .
As in recent morning the overcast & foggy cloak can create a sombre mood until the sun breaks though. ... this was some what compounded by thoughts of transitioning back to "Normal" ? life ... lots of mixed emotions.. just like the dour landscape I was concerned at just returning to plain old normal it was then that the clear thought came...
"you can't always live in the highs ... it in the ordinary that the extraordinary is found!"
To help with the transition process I am mentally reflecting on segments of our tip each day. (see attached day 1-11) . The first 11 days had enough to savour for a whole meal from our excited and adrenalin fuelled start to hitting our stride 2 weeks in @ Navarette ... the excitement of washing by hand to making new friends to the sights, sounds and yes the smells we had dreamt of and the pain & ecstasy that has never left us .
For today the sombre mood lifted as we
- encountered gum trees and leaves everywhere ... the leaf covered ground reminded me of raking up leaves from the front yard
- coming around the corner to the sound of bag pipes to see a couple of old men entertaining the pilgrims. Galacia has a lot of Gaelic influences
- A huge concrete cast Camino shell sitting on a country Alburgue
- passing a shop with a pot plant modelled on a pair d hiking boots.. now Hats an idea
- there are so much graffiti , most in Spanish , that adorns the Camino ... one caught my eye written on its side of a large industrial waste bin that stand in the main street of every town..it said "remember to be yourself "... a strange thing for a bin to say I thought☺
- popped into a great little bar for a refreshment In a hamlet in the middle of nowhere ... it was small, cosy and full of character
- finally we are staying in Melide run by brothers who were bought up in London .. funny to hear the typical pommy accent in the middle of Spain ... great late lunch / dinner, we still can't get accustomed to 9 pm dinners so prefer the former and early to bed .
It was a beautiful if not strange site as we made our way to this large town, the path was lined with what looked like maple trees in autumn with its leave falling and covering the path .. in a Spanish Summer ?. ... only on the Camino.
