The heat of the Meseta was well gone as we left sleeping Leon and made our way 22km to Villa de Mazarife. We took the route away from the highway through some pretty and undulating countryside full of shrubs, trees and wild flowers. ... you can see the early stages of transition in the landscape and in our perspective as we look to the hills and mountains of Galicia.
We met and chatted with a young Korean as we walked...he decided to do the Camino only 3 days before he left! Also a couple from Gladstone , it was the wifes 2nd Camino and the husbands first... they started in Leon which a lot of People apparently do .
A side note ... because the Camino's easier ways were pioneered by the pilgrims ... roads followed so often the original camino now runs beside a road and more interesting alternate routes are devised ... we were on one today which was way more inspiration than walking besides a highway .
Second side note - in walking nearly 500km across Spain through all sorts of landscape , isolated localities and population centres there has only be once that we have been lost. .. in that case we were trying to esape the thunderstorm and lightning and missed a sign ...thankfully I had my trusty Camino Companion App and we were able to plan a way back on the Camino with little lost time. So the Camino GPS (yellow arrow / shell etc ) works amazingly well despite less scrupulous bars & Alburgues proliferating there own arrows to take you to there establishment. The Camino army will often update old sign's and improve confusing ones, you see yellow "x" for no way ... yours eyes are always canning the landscape fore them...you can have confidence in it ( though my app gives me even more confidence ☺)
We have now arrived and doing our "chores" and the booking for tonights accommodation was a little iffy when i rang..they couldn't understand a word of English...so when we arrived there was no booking but they managed to fit us in...that's the Camino.
Tomorrow is a half day to balance out our days to go rather than have another day in Leon...fully recover from the heatwave conditions on the Meseta.
With only 3-4 days to Cruz de ferro (iron cross) ,the highest point on the Camino we will need all the rest we can get..and get our climbing legs on again after some time on the flat Meseta.
ps: on the Camino there is rating system re various towns.this one is a 3 storker...see pic..they typically nest on or around Curch steeples..we have seen them in high voltatage powere lines..amazing
